Police arraign man for beating neigbhour

The police on Thursday arraigned a 50-year-old man, Alabi Egbere, in an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court for beating up his neighbour over unpaid security bill.

Egbere, a resident of Ogundairo Str., Mushin in Lagos, pleaded not guilty to the charge of assault.

The Prosecutor, Insp. Eruada Victor told the court that the accused assaulted, Shittu Sekinat, on Jan. 30, at Ogundairo Str., Mushin in Lagos.

Victor said that the complainant had requested for the accused share of the security bill.

The prosecutor said the accused shouted at Sekinat and walked her out of his room for demanding the money during this economic situation in Nigeria.

He said that an argument followed and the accused beat her with punches, used a cane on her and injured her on the left eye.

The prosecutor said that the case was immediately reported to the police and the accused was arrested.

He said the offence contravened Section 171 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011, which on conviction attracts a three-year jail term.

Magistrate G.O. Anifowoshe granted bail to the accused in the sum of N20,000 with two sureties in like sum.

Anifowoshe said that the sureties must be gainfully employed and must show evidence of two years’ tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

She adjourned the case till March 14 for mention.
