Kidnappers release abducted Calabar doctor

Mudiaga Affe, Calabar

Kidnappers on Friday released a Senior Registrar in the Department of Paediatrics, University of Calabar Teaching Hospital, Dr. Emem Udoh, who was abducted on Monday.

Udoh, a nursing mother, was abducted in her home in Calabar shortly after she returned from duty.

Her abduction brought to six the number of medical doctors that had been kidnapped by gunmen in Calabar and environ in the last few months.

On Wednesday, doctors under the aegis of the Nigeria Medical Association in Cross River State embarked on a sit-at-home strike to protest the incessant kidnap of their colleagues in the state.

A source told Southern City News that Udoh had been released after spending four days in the kidnappers’ den.

Although details about her release were sketchy, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Irene Ugbo, confirmed the release.

She said, “The Commissioner of Police, Mr. Hafiz Inuwa, promised the medical doctors that he would be on his toes as a result of the development. He is a man of his words. He immediately deployed men of the Special Anti Robbery Squad, Anti-Cult and Anti-Kidnap to work.

“They went into action and arrested some suspects that led to the trail of the kidnappers. For now investigation is still going on. The woman was rescued alive, with no injury. The doctor was rescued yesterday evening. There was no ransom. She was rescued by the police.”

Meanwhile, doctors were meeting as at the time of filing this report to call off the three days sit-at-home strike which was declared on Wednesday after a massive protest in Calabar.

The doctors, who berated the state government for poor handling of security situations in the state,  vowed to embark on sit-at-home strike whenever their colleague was kidnapped.
