Investigation Into Alleged Attack on Katsina Chief of Staff by Customs

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has initiated an investigation into an alleged assault on Jabiru Tsauri, the Chief of Staff to the Governor of Katsina State, Dikko Radda. Reports suggest that Tsauri narrowly escaped an attack by individuals believed to be Customs personnel on July 13.

Ibrahim Kaula Mohammed, the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, stated that the incident occurred at Gorar Yammama while Tsauri was en route to Abuja. Governor Radda has strongly condemned the incident, demanding a comprehensive investigation to ensure justice is served.

He emphasised the importance of the safety and security of public officials and citizens, stating that any violation of these fundamental rights will not be tolerated.

Responding to the incident, Katsina Customs spokesman, Tahir Balarabe, expressed sympathy with the victim and the Katsina State Government, describing the incident as unfortunate. He assured that a thorough investigation is underway to determine the cause of the incident, and any individual found culpable will face the full force of the law.

Balarabe reiterated that the NCS is a reputable organisation that does not condone any form of unprofessional conduct by its officers.

He assured Nigerians, particularly the residents and government of Katsina State, that the service is committed to its mandate of combating economic sabotage and maximising revenue collection for national development.

Editorial

The recent alleged attack on Jabiru Tsauri, the Chief of Staff to the Katsina State Governor, by suspected Customs personnel, has raised serious concerns about the conduct of security personnel in Nigeria.

This incident, if proven true, represents a gross violation of the fundamental rights of an individual and a breach of the professional conduct expected of security personnel.

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has a critical role in safeguarding the nationโ€™s borders, combating smuggling, and ensuring the collection of customs duties. However, these responsibilities should not be carried out at the expense of the rights and safety of citizens. The NCS must ensure that its officers adhere strictly to the rules of engagement and professional conduct.

While the NCS has initiated an investigation into the incident, it is crucial that this process is transparent and thorough. The outcome of this investigation will not only serve justice in this particular case but will also send a clear message about the NCSโ€™s commitment to professionalism and respect for citizensโ€™ rights.

The government, on its part, must ensure that security agencies are held accountable for their actions.

This incident underscores the need for continuous training and reorientation of security personnel on professional conduct and respect for human rights.
