In a bid to fill principal positions in the nationโs unity schools, 65 civil servants of the directorate cadre are in the running. The selection process kicked off on July 25, 2023, in Abuja. Nigeriaโs unity schools, numbering 110, include special schools for gifted students and are distributed across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.
A memo from July 10, 2023, reveals that the selection process will be two-fold, involving a Computer Based Test (CBT) and an oral interview.
The memo, titled โCommencement of the Process for Selection of Principals in Federal Unity Schools to Replace Principals That Have Spent Six Years and Above,โ was signed by the Director of Human Resources of the Federal Ministry of Education, David Gende.
The memo also included a list of 65 shortlisted candidates who will compete for the available positions. The oral interview is scheduled for July 27 and 28, 2023. In 2022, 334 civil servants took the qualifying exams for principal positions. Of these, 137 failed the CBT, and only 112 made it to the final selection.
Editorial:
The selection process for new principals in Nigeriaโs unity schools is a significant event, reflecting the governmentโs commitment to improving the quality of education.
The rigorous two-stage selection process, involving a CBT and an oral interview, ensures that only the most qualified and capable individuals are chosen for these critical roles.
However, the high failure rate in the previous yearโs qualifying exams raises concerns about the preparedness of civil servants for these positions.
The government must address this issue, perhaps by providing more comprehensive training and preparation for potential candidates.
