250+ Lives Lost to Sit-at-Home Order in South-East, Says Ohanaeze

The President General of Ohanaeze, Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, disclosed this information on Tuesday, expressing his opposition to the continuation of the order.

Iwuanyanwu labelled the order as “illegal” and stated that it has caused the Igbo people immense suffering, loss of life, and property damage.

He condemned the repeated calls for sit-at-home by Simon Ekpa, describing the hardships inflicted on the region’s residents as disheartening.

The enforcement of the order by non-state actors has led to violence, resulting in deaths, injuries, and destruction of properties worth millions of naira.

The sit-at-home orders have also instilled fear in residents, hindering them from conducting their lawful businesses.

The South-East region, known for micro, small and medium-scale enterprises, indigenous manufacturing, fabrication, and agro-allied industries, has suffered significant economic losses.

Authorities estimate the losses in trillions of naira for each sit-at-home day. The region has also experienced a loss of clients and customers, increased transportation charges, and a worsening security situation due to the actions of unknown gunmen.

Iwuanyanwu emphasised the tragic human cost, stating,

“Worst still, over 250 people are estimated to have been killed through the enforcement of these orders.”

The alarming revelation by Ohanaeze Ndigbo that over 250 people have been killed in the enforcement of the sit-at-home order in the South-East region is a grave concern that demands immediate attention.

The situation has escalated beyond a mere political statement to a humanitarian crisis.

While the intention behind the sit-at-home order may have been to express discontent or seek attention to specific issues, the violent enforcement and resulting loss of life and economic hardship cannot be justified.

It’s a situation that has spiralled out of control, with innocent civilians bearing the brunt of the violence.

The South-East region’s economy, heavily reliant on small and medium-scale enterprises, has been severely impacted. The loss of life and economic hardship paints a grim picture of a region in turmoil.

The government, community leaders, and all stakeholders must address this crisis urgently. Dialogue, empathy, and a commitment to the rule of law must replace violence and intimidation.

It’s a lesson that all parties must heed and a challenge that requires collective responsibility and decisive action.
