In a tragic incident, Police Inspector Jude Ukpaka was fatally shot by unidentified gunmen in the Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State. The assailants also made off with Ukpaka’s AK 47 rifle and an unspecified amount of ammunition.
The attack occurred while Ukpaka and two of his colleagues, members of Dragon 19 attached to the Ughelli Area Command, were stationed at a checkpoint near the Evwreni section of the East-West Road.
The assailants’ gunfire left the windshield of the Toyota Hilux patrol van used by the policemen riddled with bullets.
This incident follows a similar attack two months prior, where two policemen attached to the Ofuoma Police Division were killed, and their guns were stolen in the Ekredjebor community within the same local government area.
According to a security source, the other policemen at the checkpoint escaped into a nearby swamp when the attack began. Ukpaka, however, was shot in the chest and died at the scene. His remains have since been moved to a mortuary.
Editorial
The fatal attack on Police Inspector Jude Ukpaka and the theft of his service weapon is a stark reminder of the security challenges we face in our society. While bringing the perpetrators to justice is essential, addressing the root causes of such violence is equally crucial.
The frequency of these attacks on our law enforcement officers is alarming and calls for a comprehensive review of our security strategies. Our policemen must be adequately equipped and trained to handle such threats and receive government and community support.
As we mourn the loss of Inspector Ukpaka, let us also remember the importance of maintaining law and order in our society. We must all play our part in ensuring the safety and security of our communities.
