The Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN) has arrested sixteen officers for alleged indiscipline and breach of service regulations.
In a statement dated October 4, 2025, signed by Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, Director of Defence Information, the military said the arrests followed a routine exercise aimed at enforcing discipline within the ranks.
According to the statement, preliminary investigations revealed that the affected officers’ grievances “stemmed largely from perceived career stagnation caused by repeated failure in promotion examinations, among other issues“.
According to the statement, “some of the apprehended officers had been under jurisdiction for various offences, either awaiting or undergoing trial”.
“Their conduct was deemed incompatible with the standards of military service,” it said.
The military authorities noted that, upon completion of the investigations, the indicted officers would face military disciplinary proceedings in “accordance with established procedures to ensure accountability and preserve professionalism within the Armed Forces”.
“The Armed Forces wishes to assure the general public that these actions are strictly disciplinary in nature and part of routine efforts to maintain order, discipline, and loyalty within the ranks,” Brigadier General Gusau stated.
He added that the Armed Forces “will not tolerate behaviour that undermines the integrity of the institution or threatens its constitutional role under democratic authority.”
The AFN reaffirmed its commitment to upholding professionalism and constitutional responsibilities in the discharge of its duties.
