Two police officers attached to the Mobile Police Force (MOPOL) 20 in Ikeja, Lagos, were seriously injured in a road accident on Sunday while on illegal duty in Edo State, according to the police.

According to a police wireless message from MOPOL 20 Ikeja, dated October 5, 2025, the officers, identified as Inspector Abubakar Mohammed (AP/No. 373710) and Sergeant Usman Abdulmajid (F/No. 508996), were involved in a crash around 2:20 p.m. at Uvwie community along the Benin–Agbor Road.

The message, which was relayed to the Lagos State Commissioner of Police through the Department of Operations, stated that the officers were travelling in a white Toyota Hilux van with registration number FKJ 445 HK when the accident occurred.

According to the report, both officers sustained serious injuries and were rushed to Abudu Medical Centre for treatment. The Inspector reportedly suffered a fracture in his right thigh, while the Sergeant, who was initially unconscious, later regained consciousness.

Police authorities confirmed that two rifles: one AK-47 with breach number NK344711 and one FMC rifle with two magazines, were recovered and handed over to the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Abudu Division for safekeeping.

Investigations later revealed that the two officers were on an unauthorized assignment, having left their base without approval.

“It was discovered that the Inspector and the Sergeant were on illegal duty, having travelled without authorization. They have been defaulted, and their trial will commence as soon as they return to base,” the police report said.

A senior officer has been assigned to travel to Benin to retrieve the firearms, while further updates on the case are expected, the report added.

However, details contained in the police wireless message appear to contradict the account provided by the Ugoneki Police Outpost in Edo State, which also issued a report on Sunday.

According to the Edo report, three police officers attached to the Lagos State Police Command were injured in the crash, not two as stated in the Lagos wireless message.

The Edo account also noted that the accident occurred at about 12:20 p.m. near Uvwe community, whereas the Lagos report placed the time of the incident at 2:20 p.m.

The Ugoneki Police Outpost further stated that a white Toyota Hilux with registration number FKJ 445 HK (Lagos) reportedly somersaulted and veered off the road into a bush, leaving the occupants with serious injuries.

“Today, being 05/10/25 at about 1220hrs, Eye received a distress call from D/O Ugoneki Police Outpost that a Toyota Hilux, white in colour, with registration number Lagos FKJ 445 HK, was involved in a serious motor accident at Uvwe Community along Benin–Agbor Road,” the police report said.

“On arrival at the accident scene, it was discovered that the Hilux capsized and somersaulted into the thick bush.”

The victims, identified as Inspector Abubakar Mohammed, Sergeant Usman Abdul, and Emmanuel Osas, the driver, were rescued and taken to the Abudu Health Centre for medical attention.

The inspector sustained a fracture to his right thigh, “while the sergeant was unconscious but later regained consciousness”.

The Edo report said two rifles, an AK-47 (No. NK344711) loaded with 20 rounds of ammunition and an FMC rifle with two magazines containing 14 live and two expended rounds, were recovered from the scene and placed in safe custody at the Abudu Divisional Police Office.

It also stated that the officers were on illegal duty en route to the eastern part of the country at the time of the accident.

“Upon questioning, they refused to disclose their AP and F/No respectively. It was later discovered that they are personnel of MOPOL 2 Lagos and were on illegal duty from Lagos to the eastern states,” the report said.

“Their rifles are in safe custody with the DPO Abudu, while the Hilux has been towed to Ugoneki Police Outpost for safekeeping.”
