History is coming to Fripp Island this week.
For what is believed to be the first time in the history of Division II college golf, the Golfweek Fripp Island to Bermuda Invitational will offer an exemption into next month’s PGA Tour event, the Butterfield Bermuda Championship. The tournament, hosted at Ocean Point Golf Course in Fripp Island, South Carolina, features some of the top men’s college golf teams in Division II, including six of the top 10 and 10 of the top 17 teams in the country.
“We’ve definitely had this one circled on the calendar ever since getting confirmation that it would definitely be happening last winter,” Lee University coach Evan Spence said. “This will be the first time that we’ve had a PGA Tour exemption up for grabs at the end of the week for an individual winner at the DII level, and we couldn’t be more excited or appreciative to be a part of that here at Lee. Couple that with the fact that it’s being hosted at a beautiful venue like Fripp Island and features one of the strongest fields of the year from a team perspective as well and you certainly have a case to call this the absolute premier event in DII college golf this year.”
The 2025 Butterfield Bermuda Championship is the penultimate event on the PGA Tour’s 2025 schedule and is set for Nov. 13-16 at Port Royal Golf Course in Southampton, Bermuda.
The Fripp Island to Bermuda Invitational, which Golfweek’s Lance Ringler is hosting, will feature a 36-hole round Monday, Oct. 20 with the final round coming Tuesday, Oct. 21. The medalist will earn a spot in the field next month in Bermuda.
“The Butterfield Bermuda Championship is thrilled to extend an exemption to the winner of this year’s Fripp Island to Bermuda Invite,” said Danielle Carrera, the tournament director at the Butterfield. “We pride ourselves on providing opportunities for the next generation of professional golfers. This collegiate event does just that, opening the door for more of the best amateurs in the world to compete on the PGA Tour stage. We look forward to welcoming the 2025 champion to Bermuda this fall.”
The field includes No. 2 Lee, No. 3 West Florida, No. 6 Florida Southern, No. 8 St. Mary’s University, No. 9 Catawba College, No. 10 Georgia Southwestern, No. 12 Rollins, No. 14 Columbus State, No. 16 Barry, No. 17 Nova Southeastern, No. 24 North Georgia, No. 28 USCB, No. 30 Lincoln Memorial, No. 51 Lenoir-Rhyne and No. 81 Valdosta State.
“”I know all of us as coaches are hopeful that there will continue to be more and more opportunities like this one funnel into our level of college golf because these guys deserve these chances,” Spence said. “I’ll certainly be pulling hard for whoever winds up in Bermuda next month representing DII programs across the country, whoever that winds up being.”
