The bitter war of words between Democratic Representative Ilhan Omar and United States President Donald Trump has escalated after the Somali-born congresswoman lashed out at Trump, calling him a “lying buffoon” and an “embarrassing liar.”
Omar’s fiery response came after Trump told supporters that he had met with the President of Somalia and suggested handing her over, but claimed the Somali leader refused.
“You know, I met the head of Somalia… And I suggested that maybe he’d like to take her back. And he said, ‘I don’t want her,’” Trump said.
Omar, representing Minnesota’s 5th District, dismissed the remarks as another baseless fabrication by Trump.
“From denying Somalia had a president to making up a story, President Trump is a lying buffoon. No one should take this embarrassing fool seriously,” she wrote on X.

The spat recently deepened after Trump took to his Truth Social platform to renew his attacks on Omar and Somalia, painting the Horn of Africa nation as a failed state.
“Ilhan Omar’s Country of Somalia is plagued by a lack of central Government control, persistent Poverty, Hunger, Resurgent Terrorism, Piracy, decades of Civil War, Corruption, and pervasive Violence,” Trump wrote, before reviving old conspiracies that Omar allegedly married her brother to gain U.S. citizenship.
“What SCUM we have in our Country, telling us what to do and how to do it,” he added.
Later, aboard Air Force One, Trump doubled down, calling for Omar’s impeachment after a House resolution to reprimand and strip her of committee assignments failed.
“I think she’s terrible. I think she should be impeached. I think she’s terrible,” he told reporters.
Referring to Somalia, Trump mocked: “So how are they doing? How’s your government? Do they have a president? Do they have a council? Do they have anything? Do they have police? I love these people. They come from a place with nothing, nothing, no, anything, and then they tell us how to run our country.”
The latest row comes days after Omar’s controversial remarks on conservative activist Charlie Kirk, who was assassinated on September 10.
She described him as a “reprehensible human being” and a “stochastic terrorist,” sparking outrage among Republicans. In response, Rep. Nancy Mace introduced a resolution to censure Omar, but it failed on the House floor.
Trump and Omar have a long history of animosity. As one of the first Muslim women in Congress, Omar has often been a target of Trump’s nationalist rhetoric, while she has branded him a racist demagogue unfit for office.
