Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, has called for urgent action to end the ongoing conflict in Gaza, where hostages remain in deplorable conditions two years after a large-scale terror attack on Israel that killed scores and traumatised communities.
The anniversary comes as the region continues to face violence and humanitarian crises.
In a statement posted on his verified X handle on October 7, two years after the deadly Hamas attack on Israel, Guterres demanded the immediate release of captives in Gaza, emphasising the urgency of the situation.
He said, “I have said it time and again, and I am repeating it today with even greater urgency: Release the hostages, unconditionally & immediately.”
Two years ago today, Hamas and other Palestinian armed groups launched an abhorrent large-scale terror attack on Israel. On this day, let us remember all those who were killed and suffered horrific violence.
The horror of that dark day will be forever seared in the memories of…

He also highlighted the wider human cost of the conflict, noting the impact on civilians caught in the crossfire.
“End the suffering for all. This is a humanitarian catastrophe on a scale that defies comprehension,” Guterres said.
Calling for an immediate halt to hostilities, Guterres stressed the need to prevent further civilian casualties.
“Put an end to the hostilities in Gaza, Israel & the region now. Stop making civilians pay with their lives & their futures,” he said, urging all parties to choose hope over continued trauma. “After two years of trauma, we must choose hope. Now.”
Guterres also referred to a recent proposal by former US President Donald Trump as a possible pathway to peace.
“The recent proposal @POTUS presents an opportunity that must be seized to bring this tragic conflict to an end,” he said, adding, “A permanent ceasefire and a credible political process [to] prevent further bloodshed & pave the way for peace” are essential.
Reaffirming the UN’s role in mediating the conflict, Guterres emphasised the organisation’s commitment to peace efforts.
“@UN remains unwavering in its commitment to support peace,” he said, concluding with a call to honour the victims: “On this solemn anniversary, let us honour the memory of all the victims by working for the only path forward: a just & lasting peace, in which Israelis, Palestinians & all the peoples of the region live side by side in security, dignity and mutual respect.”
