The Chairman of Bariga Local Council, Bukola Adedeji, has commenced the excavation and proper channelisation of major canals across the council.
This is in a bid to ensure a safe environment and prevent flooding.
The exercise, which began at Ekimogun Street, also covers Boston Cole, Ewenla, Olowolagba, Alhaji Ariyo, and Emmanuel streets.
According to the council boss, the desilting and evacuation efforts were part of proactive measures to safeguard residents during the rainy season.
Adedeji explained that the project was designed to tackle long-standing drainage challenges in the area and reduce the risk of flooding, which has posed health and safety threats to residents in the past.
“This intervention is necessary to ensure that our people live in a cleaner, safer environment. We are committed to sustaining these efforts across Bariga and ensuring that residents no longer suffer avoidable losses during heavy rainfall,” she said.
She appealed to members of the community to be environmentally conscious and desist from indiscriminate dumping of refuse into canals.
“Our canals are not dumpsites. We must stop habits that compromise the environment and endanger lives. I urge residents to patronise government-approved Private Sector Participation (PSP) operators for proper waste disposal,” she added.
The council boss assured that her administration would continue to prioritise environmental health and infrastructure renewal as part of its mandate to improve the quality of life for Bariga residents.
