Justin Leonard chose a good time to get his fifth eagle of the season.

The 53-year-old made eagle on the closing par-5 18th at the Country Club of Virginia on Sunday to win the first PGA Tour Champions Playoff event, the Dominion Energy Charity Classic, in Richmond, Virginia. Leonard, who shot 4-under 68 in the final round, finished a shot ahead of Ernie Els and Thomas Bjorn at 12 under.

Els, the leader with 18 holes to go, shot even in the final round. He was 12 under with two holes to go but bogeyed the 17th. He then had a chance to tie Leonard with a birdie putt on 18 but was unable to make it, his attempt staying high of the hole.

For Leonard, it’s his second PGA Tour Champions win of the season. He also won the Chubb Classic in February. He also moves up eight spots to ninth in the Charles Schwab Cup standings.

Meanwhile, the first playoff event is in the books, which means only the top 54 players in the Schwab Cup standings move on to the Simmons Bank Championship. Scott Parel, who finished T-21 this week, was the only player to move into the top 54, knocking out David Bransdon in the process.

After the Simmons Bank championship, only the top-36 players make the Charles Schwab Cup Championship.
